Fire Opal – A Cool Stone With Lots of Heat

August 30th, 2010 by opalring No comments »

All opals are made of silicon dioxide and water. The amount of water varies and determines the fragility of the individual stone. This gemstone is formed when silicon dioxide becomes wet and turns to a gel. This gel substance then works its way into the open spaces between rocks and caves. As it sets, an opal is formed.

Typically, the gemstone retains about 10% water content which makes it quite soft and delicate. They also come in a variety of colors-shades of blue, green, pink, black, white, red, yellow and orange. This stone is coveted for its play of color which is the dazzling display of color as light bounces off the spheres of silica.

The fire opal is one gemstone that is less desired for its play of color as it is for its actual color. As the name implies, this stone is afire with reds, yellows and oranges. Finding a fire opal pendant with hot shades as well as play of color offers the best of both worlds.

Where do they come from?

This fiery stone typically comes from Mexico. In fact, it is the country’s official gemstone. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs used the fire opal in their mosaic creations and also in special ceremonies. While most of the gemstones on the market likely came from Mexico, there are other mines located in the United States, South America and Australia among others. Most recently, significant deposits were found in Brazil and the stones were of considerable size.

Special days for a special stone

The opal is the birthstone for October. This is a great time to surprise a birthday girl with the bold hot shades of a fire opal bracelet instead of the more commonly known pastel iridescent gemstones. Just looking at it will lift her spirits and energize her. Another special day reserved for this stone is the 14th wedding anniversary. After all these years, the love is still burning strong. What better way to show this than with a smoldering hot fire opal.

Cleaning and caring for jewelry

Because of the water content, this stone is very delicate with a ranking between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Because of this, protect pieces from scratches and chips by storing them in a soft jewelry bag away from other harder pieces of jewelry.

Fire opals and other varieties should be protected from sudden and extreme temperature changes as well as arid conditions that can dry the stones out. To clean them, use a very soft cloth and gentle soap with tepid water to remove any residue. Because this gem is not durable enough for everyday wear, saving it for special events means less cleaning as well. The polished look can eventually wear away and may require re-polishing.

This hot gemstone looks spectacular in a cabochon or a faceted cut, but it should be in a setting that protects the stone as much as possible. This is particularly important for pieces like a fire opal bracelet that tend to get knocked around more often. Whether it is set in silver or gold, this stone is on fire with its lava flow of reds, oranges and yellows.

The Development of Birthstone Jewelry Over the Ages

August 29th, 2010 by opalring No comments »

Since the first century C.E. gemstones have been associated with the twelve signs of the Zodiac. In more modern times, these gems have been used in birthstone jewelry which is often given as a gift to celebrate a loved one’s birthday. The origins of the practice of associating particular gems with zodiacal signs is thought to have it’s beginnings in the Breastplate of Aaron which had twelve gemstones, each associated with one of the twelve tribes of Israel, sewn into it.

Each gem had the name of the tribe inscribed on it and they were sewn into the breastplate in four rows of 3. While the names of the gems that were used are well known, the precise translation is undetermined so the particular gemstones that were used are unknown. This has led to different gems being associated with the various signs of the zodiac.

Modern Birthstone Systems

Later birthstones became connected with the months of the year rather than the signs of the zodiac and there’s been a good deal of variation in the month to which a gem is allocated. The most extensively used list at present is the one which was proposed by the Association of Jewelers in America in 1912, and has some substitutes for the higher-priced gemstones. One gemstone has been added since then. Tanzanite was added as a birthstone for December in 2002 by the American Gem Association although it is not acknowledged by everybody.

Other Birthstone Systems

Other schemes which associate specific stones with the birth month include Ayurvedic birthstones and mystical birthstones. The mystical birthstones listing dates back to over 1000 years ago and originated Tibet, the Ayurvedic scheme originated in ancient Indian philosophy and is thought have originated approximately 1500 B.C. However nearly everyone uses the modern listings initiated by the Association of Jewelers.

The Contemporary System

January – emerald, garnet
February – amethyst
March – aquamarine
April – diamond
May – emerald
June – moonstone, pearl
July – ruby
August – peridot
September – sapphire
October – tourmaline, opal
November – topaz, citrine
December – blue topaz, tanzanite, turquiose

Conclusion

If you are buying birthstone jewelry as a gift there are a number of different gemstones to choose from. If the modern August peridot is not to your taste you could choose a carnelian from the traditional list instead. You can find beautiful birthstone rings, pendants, necklaces and even charms set with a tiny gemstone. They would each make a wonderful gift that shows how much care you have taken to choose a perfect gift for a very special person.

Costume Jewelry

August 26th, 2010 by opalring No comments »

All that glitters is not gold. Costume jewelry refers to jewelry that is made of less valuable materials, including base metals, glass, plastic, and synthetic stones. These are used in place of precious metals and gems. Also called “Fashion jewelry,” costume jewelry is mostly inexpensive and flashy. Costume jewelry is not an asset for it is mainly used for fashion purposes. Because it is often used for stage costumes, it is called “costume jewelry.”

Silver over brass and gold over silver are favorite combinations. Crystals have also found their way into fashion jewelry. Ivory is extensively used to create fashion jewelry for men. Low value costume jewelry involves the use of plastic and even acrylic. The majority of costume jewelry is handcrafted. Rings, bracelets, chains, pendants, earrings and necklaces are popular items of costume jewelry. These are crafted using gems such as amber, amethyst, aquamarine, freshwater pearl, garnet and opal.

A little care taken will go a long way in preserving the glitter of costume jewelry. After usage this type of jewelry must be wiped with a soft cloth since body sweat dulls the metals used. Fashion jewelry must be kept separately in the pouches or velvet boxes that they originally come in.

Never dip this jewelry in strong solutions, for it could alter the color of stones or even displace the epoxies used. Hair sprays and perfumes must be used prior to wearing costume jewelry. Costume jewelry will need periodic maintenance. They may need re-polishing in gold or silver. Dull gems must be replaced with brighter ones.

There are several advantages in buying costume jewelry. First of all, costume jewelry is inexpensive, but it is varied in style as real precious jewelry. Many times, it’s an exact replica of the original, giving the buyer the satisfaction of wearing a near original piece. Since it is more affordable, many pieces can be bought for the price of one expensive piece – allowing for the wearer to have more options when it comes to their jewelry collection.

Engagement Filigree Ring – An Art Form All to Themselves

August 25th, 2010 by opalring No comments »

If you are about to chose an engagement filigree ring to represent your heart and thoughts at the time of your proposal, she might faint. This type of ring has more craftsmanship involved in not only the design but their creation than any other style known to man.

There are simple filigree rings where there is limited engraving and artwork, but most are the multiple filigree, with a flowing design that encompass the entire ring itself.

When an engagement filigree ring is decided on, then the type of cut should be considered. Any and every style of cut stone has been incorporated into a filigree style ring. There are no limitations. The several square cuts have a wondrous look in this style along with the round. There are even a few with the marquise cut stone with baguette diamonds encrusted in the bands design that look exquisite.

The choices are limitless, but when it comes to the metal used, the old world ones were mostly made of silver. Today the preferred metals are white gold and platinum. When Platinum is used, one consideration is that this is a very strong and hard metal. The design once set will never lose it shape, but details take a master craftsman also.

Modern instruments have helped with this hardness issue to a point, but still not every craftsman can work with platinum to this fine of detail.

When it comes to the cost of a ring, the engagement filigree ring with a large diamond is amongst the most expensive. But likewise they are also the most beautiful pieces o artwork known to man. This type of ring is just pure class.

The engagement filigree ring will be costly but your sentiment will be unmistakably known.
